WHAT TIME OF DAY SHOULD I WATER?

We recommend that watering early in the morning, followed by watering in the late evening, should it be a particularly dry spell.

Water in the middle of the day, ONLY, if it is cool or you have a new lawn requiring constant moisture.

You should only water more than once per day if evaporation is extreme or if your soil won't hold much water because of the clay content, or the slope of a hill causes too much run off.

How often should I water my lawn...

 ...and for how long?

Because each lawn is unique, the answer to this question can vary.

The best watering times and length of watering depends on on the climate, soil and grass conditions.  It is generally preferable to water infrequesntly for a longer period of time. Frequent watering promotes surface root growth, which is obviously not a good thing.

In the UK, the requirement can vary from 10mm-24mm per week (10-24 litres per sqm).

Ask Auto Aqua for information as run times will mainly depend on weather, sprinkler type, and sprinkler spacing.

HOW MANY SPRINKLERS CAN I RUN AT ONE TIME?

This will depend on your available water supply; the more you run at one time the more water flow and pressure you need.  The reason why we use tank and pump systems is that the pressure from the mains is not adequate.  It would be possible to run short runs of drip line and low volume system from the mains water supply.

In all cases you need to work out how many sprinklers you need, then work out what their total flow requirements is.  The required flow is then divided by your available flow which will indicate approximately how many sprinklers you need to run.

Remember, the bigger the zones the bigger the pipe and pump you need, but no need to worry, Auto Aqua can advise on all these areas!

MAINTENANCE?

WHAT  MAINTENANCE DO I NEED TO DO ON MY OWN IRRIGATION SYSTEM?

Monthly: Adjust timer settings, check and adjust sprinkler sprays and clean filter

Once each season: Clean filters in alll sprinkler heads, manually operate each valve and check signal cable for any damage.

As needed: Unclog sprinkler heads, and adjust levels of heads to ground level.

The system may require draining before the winter to prevent frost damage, and a spring service to get it up and running before the new season.  Contact us should you need any help.

WHAT SHOULD I DO IF IT RAINS?

We always install a rain sensor, which allows automatic shutdown during rainy weather, and turns the system back on once the sensor has dried out.  The sensor is designed so that it mimics the soil moisture levels, and can be set to different  rainfall levels. The controller can also override  the sensor....but remember to turn it on again!

Automated Irrigation Systems

DO I NEED TO AUTOMATE MY SYSTEM?

Whatever type of irrigation system you have you will only truly benefit from it if you automate.  This is as simple as a tap mounted battery powered unit for very small systems or battery/mains pwered multi-zone controllers on medium to large systems.  Not only does it relieve you from the chore of watering when you are home or away, but it also ensures your garden gets the correct amount of water at the right time.

Using Other Water Sources

I WANT TO IRRIGATE USING WATER FROM A BOREHOLE/LAKE/STREAM. WHAT DO I NEED FOR THIS?

A pump will be needed to move the water and to provide water pressure for your system.  You also need a dirty water filter to make sure debris (even from the cleanest lake etc) does not clog your sprinklers.

Additional components such as float switches and an electrical control switch  will be required. We can advise and supply these as a complete system. Assuming it is a private domestic property you are able to draw up to 20,000 litres per day without an extraction licence, although you should always check with the local office of the Environment Agency.
